A Unit designates any one of the following in the Boy Scouts of America:

  • Pack - Cub Scouting
  • Troop or Post - Boy Scouting
  • Team - Varsity Scouting
  • Crew or Ship - Venturing

Each unit is sponsored by a chartered organization which is a religious, civic, fraternal, educational or other group that has applied for and received a charter to operate a Scouting unit. The unit is administered by a committee, which is appointed by the chartered organization.

The unit committee, led by the committee chair person, oversees the unit program and activities and manages record keeping, finance, leadership recruitment and registration. The unit is led by a registered and trained leader:

  • Cubmaster - Cub Scout Pack
  • Scoutmaster - Boy Scout Troop
  • Coach - Varsity Team
  • Advisor or Skipper - Venture Crew or Ship

These leaders, with one or more assistants, are appointed by the unit committee and must be approved by both the chartered organization and the local council.
